Safety

Sapadere Canyon safety and travel information

No day in a mountain gorge is without risk, and no honest operator calls it risk-free. This page explains what the risks of a Sapadere day are and what the team does about each one.

The mountain road

The canyon is reached by a winding road up from the coast. The vehicles are air-conditioned coaches and minibuses driven by the operator's drivers who make the trip routinely; guests stay seated while the vehicle moves. If you are prone to motion sickness, a seat near the front and a word to the guide help.

The walkway

About 750 m of timber walkway with steel handrails, hung above the river, with steps and uneven sections. It is well maintained and easy walking for anyone comfortable on stairs — and it is damp near the falls. The rules that keep it safe are simple: shoes with grip, a hand on the rail on the steps, no running, no climbing over the rail, phones in pockets. It is not suitable for guests with serious mobility difficulties or wheelchairs, and a pushchair cannot be pushed the whole way.

Cold-water swimming

The pools are spring-fed and cold all year. Cold water takes the breath away on entry and tires swimmers faster than they expect; the rock in and around the pools is smooth and wet. Swimming is optional, only where the guide allows it that day, and never alone. Enter slowly, stay near the edge until you have your breath, keep swims short, and warm up in the sun afterwards. Non-swimmers and small children stay at the edge; there is no lifeguard and no marked shallow end.

Heat, sun and water

The drive, the rest stop and lunch by the open river are in full sun in summer. A hat, sunscreen and water bought at the stops are the answer; the gorge itself is shaded and cooler. Outside food and drink are not taken into the canyon, so buy your water at the stops.

Weather and closures

After heavy rain the river rises and the canyon can close; in winter conditions the same applies. The decision is made before the day, and a tour that cannot run is moved to another date or cancelled free of charge. We do not promise good weather and we do not run a day the canyon cannot host.

Children and seniors

Children walk on their own feet with a hand held on the steps; infants travel in an adult's arms or a carrier. Seniors who manage stairs manage the walkway; the group moves at its slowest member's pace and rests at the water. The families page and the who can join page go case by case.

The guide

A guide is with the group from pickup to drop-off: on the road, on the walkway, at the pools and at lunch. The guide's instructions on where to walk and where to swim are followed — that is the single most important safety measure of the day.

Insurance and emergencies

Local travel insurance for the transfer and the tour is included in the price. It is not a substitute for your own travel and health insurance. The guide carries the operator's phone and knows the route to help; tell the guide at pickup about any condition the team should know of, and put it in the booking notes beforehand.

What we will not say

  • That the day is "100 % safe" — no day outdoors is.
  • A perfect-weather promise, or a promise of a swim.
  • A walkway described without its steps.
  • A water temperature we have not measured.
