Where is Sapadere Canyon?

In the Taurus Mountains, inland from the coast east of Alanya, above the village that gives it its name. The gorge was cut by a mountain river through pale limestone; the walls rise up to about 400 m and the floor is water almost the whole way. From Alanya centre it is roughly 40–45 km by road depending on the route; from the Side coast about 110 km.

How long does the day take?

About 7 hours from your hotel door and back on the canyon tour from Alanya, about 8 on the Dim River version, and about 8 on the tour from Side. The canyon walk itself is the short part — the walkway is about 750 m each way, walked slowly with stops. The rest is the mountain road, the water, the cave if you take it and lunch.

What can you see?

A wooden walkway with steel handrails hung above the river, tightening between the rock walls until the light comes down in strips. Cascades along the way and, at the end, a chain of waterfalls into turquoise pools. On the way out, an optional show cave — Cüceler, the Dwarfs' Cave — with stalactites and a viewing terrace. On the Dim River tour, a second valley in the afternoon with lunch on platforms over the river. The waterfalls and walkway page goes deeper.

Can you swim?

Usually, yes, in the natural pools beneath the falls, when conditions allow and where the guide says it is safe. The water is spring-fed and cold all year — genuinely cold, the reason people come in August. Swimming is optional; a paddle counts. Details on the swimming page.

Is it suitable for children and seniors?

For anyone who walks comfortably on steps and uneven ground, yes. The walkway has handrails and is short, and the group stops at the water. It is not suitable for guests with serious mobility difficulties or for a wheelchair, and a pushchair cannot be pushed the whole way — a carrier works. Children aged 4–10 pay the child price; infants up to 3 travel free. See families and who can join.

What should you bring?

  • Shoes with grip — the timber is damp near the falls and the rock is smooth.
  • Swimwear and a towel if you want to go in.
  • A hat and sunscreen for the drive and the open stretches; a light layer for the shade of the gorge.
  • Cash in euros for the tour price (paid on the day), drinks and the optional cave ticket.
  • Nothing to eat or drink from outside — the litter rule keeps the water clean.

Tour or private car?

The guided tour is the simple answer for a hotel guest: pickup at the door, ticket and lunch arranged, a guide on the walkway, back by the afternoon. A private vehicle gives your own timing and your own group, quoted per vehicle on request. A taxi or a hire car is freedom with more to organise. The how to get there page compares them.

When is the best time?

The canyon is coolest and most welcome in the heat of high summer, when the cold water is the point. Spring and autumn are quieter and the light is softer. After heavy rain or in winter conditions access can be limited and tours do not run. The best time page takes the seasons one by one.

How much does it cost?

From €33 per adult from Alanya, with the canyon ticket, guide, lunch, transfer and insurance included; €23 per child aged 4–10. Every price is on the price page. Holding places costs nothing; you settle up on the morning of the tour, and cancelling more than 24 hours ahead is free.
